League of Legends Ranks: The Basic Structure
Terms like 'tier' and 'LP' can feel confusing the first time you queue for ranked. Once you understand the structure, it becomes much clearer where you stand and what it actually takes to climb.

Nine tiers, from Iron to Challenger
The tiers run Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger. Master and above drop the division system entirely and rank players purely by point totals in one continuous ladder.
Divisions and LP within each tier
Every tier below Master is split into four divisions (IV through I), and within each division you earn LP (League Points). Get close to 100 LP and you'll trigger a promotion series. Wins add LP and losses subtract it -- think of LP as a simple progress meter within your current division.
Why promotion series exist at all
A promotion series is a short set of games that double-checks you're actually ready for the next tier, rather than just having scraped together enough LP. It's a way of confirming you can hold your own once you get there.
Games played matters more than any single match
Rank is deliberately designed so that one or two games rarely swing things dramatically. Playing consistently and reviewing your own mistakes tends to be a faster path up the ladder than chasing quick wins.
FAQ
Does my rank reset every season?
Yes -- when a new season starts, your rank is recalibrated and you generally begin a tier or so lower than where you finished.
What if I'm struggling to climb solo?
Queuing with a duo can help, but the biggest gains usually come from identifying and cutting down on the mistakes you make most often.
